Johanna’s Story
My own experiences of birth and postpartum life have continued to draw me back to the transformative space of early parenthood. It is a time of immense change—where vulnerability, strength, love, uncertainty, and growth all exist side by side.
My first birth was a natural, unmedicated birth; however, following a significant birth injury, my recovery was long and challenging. My second birth was a planned caesarean section, which was a deeply healing experience—wonderfully redemptive, and completely different from my first journey. Yet the memories of struggle, recovery, and the emotional impact of those early experiences have stayed with me.
Over the past decade, through attending and supporting loved ones during their births, I have continued to feel drawn to this incredibly precious season of life. I have witnessed families transform and adapt in a very short space of time as they welcome a new baby and find their way into a new version of themselves.
The saying “it takes a village to raise a child” holds so much truth, yet for many families today that village is not always easily accessible. With the demands of daily life, work commitments, and the realities of raising a family, many parents are navigating this transition with less support around them than previous generations may have had.
Wanting to be part of positive change—and to help nurture and protect the postpartum space for women and families—led me to pursue formal doula training. I completed my certification through Doula Beginnings in 2026, qualifying as both a birth and postpartum doula.
I feel privileged to walk alongside families as they journey into parenthood, whether for the first time or as their family grows. Providing gentle guidance, practical support, and a calm, nurturing presence is where I thrive. I love supporting families through the joys, challenges, questions, and emotions that come with growing, birthing, and settling into life with a new baby.
Working alongside midwives and medical professionals, I am committed to offering evidence-based, non-clinical support that honours each family’s individual choices and experiences. My hope is to empower parents, strengthen their confidence, and help create a supported and connected beginning for their growing family.
There is strong evidence that continuous support during labour—particularly from someone in a doula role—is associated with better birth outcomes and a more positive birth experience. The best evidence comes from a large Cochrane systematic review, which is considered one of the highest standards of medical evidence.
